Taillard Family Wines are privileged to be able to showcase the talents of their winemaker, Hugo Truter. Hugo completed his degree in 1999 at the University of Stellenbosch. During this time, he worked part-time gaining valuable experience at Hillcrest and Neil Ellis. His first years in the industry was spent at the Swartland Cellar as assistant winemaker, gaining the respect of his peers and working his way to be the winemaker for one of the boutique cellars.
In 2005 he is appointed as the cellar master and winemaker at Wamakersvallei in Wellington where he proved his worth in 2007 by winning the General Smuts Trophy with his Pinotage. This was the first time since 1952 that Pinotage received this coveted award. Other awards included Veritas Double Gold and reaching the Pinotage Top 10. During this time his wife, Celeste, also a winemaker, joins him start their own range of wines and in 2010 they release their first wine – Agaat Christina. This led to him leaving the bigger cellars in 2013 to focus exclusively on their own business, Truter Family Wines.
His philosophy is captured in the quote that is prominently displayed on the wall in his office “Working hard for something we don’t care for is stress, working hard for something we care for is our passion”.
